This is the battle that took place in 251 near Abritus, in the territory of present-day Bulgaria, between the Roman army and a coalition led by the Goths.

In the engagement, Emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus lost their lives; this is recorded as one of the first instances of a Roman emperor dying on the battlefield. The defeat is considered an important event indicating the instability on Rome's northern frontier during the Crisis of the Third Century and the increase in barbarian pressure.
