In 31 BC, a decisive naval battle took place at Actium off the coast of Greece between the fleet of Octavian and the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt.

Octavian's decisive victory ended the Roman civil wars. This victory enabled Octavian to become the sole dominant power; shortly afterward, taking the title Augustus, he became the first emperor of the Roman Empire.
