In 1402, the Ottoman army and the forces of the Central Asian ruler Timur faced one another on the Plain of Ankara.

Timur's army, superior in numbers and organization, prevailed; Sultan Bayezid I was taken captive. This outcome shook Ottoman unity in Anatolia and plunged the state into a long period of crisis known as the Interregnum (Fetret Devri).
