End of Apartheid

1994 CE · political

In 1994, the apartheid system based on racial discrimination, which had been applied in South Africa for decades, formally came to an end.

The first democratic elections, in which citizens of all races participated, were held, and Nelson Mandela was elected head of state. This process was the result of reforms initiated by the administration of F. W. de Klerk and of long-lasting negotiations. The abolition of apartheid is regarded as a turning point in the history of South Africa and in the struggle for human rights.
