Aristarchus’ Heliocentric Model

270 BCE · Samos · science

Aristarchus of Samos was a Greek astronomer and mathematician who lived in the 3rd century BCE.

According to ancient sources, he proposed a heliocentric (Sun-centered) model holding that the Earth and the other planets revolve around the Sun. This view was not widely accepted in his time, and the geocentric understanding remained dominant; however, Aristarchus is regarded as one of the known early proponents of heliocentric thought.
