The Greek mathematician and engineer Archimedes (approximately 287–212 BCE) lived in Syracuse and carried out groundbreaking work in the fields of mechanics and mathematics.

He systematically explained the principle of the lever, set out the fluid equilibrium by which a body is displaced by the buoyant force within a liquid (Archimedes' principle), and developed advanced methods for the number pi and for area and volume calculations.
