In 762, the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur founded the new capital, Baghdad (Madinat al-Salam), on the banks of the Tigris.

Becoming one of the largest cities in the world in a short time, Baghdad became the center of science, trade, and culture during the Golden Age of Islam. Through institutions such as the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma), Greek, Persian, and Indian knowledge was translated into Arabic and developed.
