In the first war, the Balkan states united against the Ottoman Empire and captured most of the empire's European territories. In the Second Balkan War of 1913, the former allies fell into disagreement over the partition of the captured territories, particularly Macedonia; Bulgaria went to war against the other states but was defeated. During this process, the Ottomans retook Edirne. The wars had a significant influence on the road leading to the First World War.
