Fall of the Western Roman Empire

476 CE · Ravenna, İtalya · fall

In 476 CE, the Germanic commander Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and sent the imperial regalia to the East.

This event is considered the symbolic end of the Western Roman Empire, which had in fact already fragmented. Germanic kingdoms took the place of Rome; the Middle Ages began in Europe, marked by the dissolution of central authority and the emergence of the feudal order. The Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, however, endured for another thousand years.
