In April and May 1945, Soviet forces encircled and captured Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany.

After fierce fighting in the city, German resistance collapsed. On 30 April 1945, Adolf Hitler took his own life in his bunker in besieged Berlin. The fall of Berlin symbolized the end of Nazi rule in Europe and the approach of Germany's unconditional surrender; Germany surrendered a few days later.
