1917 CE · Petrograd (St. Petersburg) · revolution

The Bolshevik Revolution is the uprising in the autumn of 1917 in which the Bolsheviks under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin seized power in Russia.

Earlier that same year, the tsarist regime had first been overthrown and a provisional government established. The Bolsheviks took control through the uprising that overthrew this government. After the revolution, while Russia moved toward withdrawing from the war, a long and bloody civil war began within the country. This process subsequently led to the founding of the Soviet Union and profoundly affected world politics throughout the 20th century.
