In 1054, the churches of Rome (Catholic) and Constantinople (Orthodox) formally separated through mutual excommunication, over differences concerning authority, theology (the filioque controversy), and liturgy.

Known as the "Great Schism," this rupture divided Christianity into two principal branches that persist to this day and deepened the political and cultural division between East and West.
