The Portuguese fleet led by Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the coast of present-day Brazil during its voyage along the sea route to India.

This arrival is regarded as the beginning of Portugal's presence in South America. Although the principal aim of the expedition was the Asian trade routes, reaching the coast of Brazil opened a new area in Portugal's overseas expansion.
