In 53 BCE, near Carrhae (Harran) in what is now southeastern Anatolia, the Roman army under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus confronted the forces of the Parthian Empire.

The Parthians' mounted archers and heavy cavalry inflicted a severe defeat on the Roman legions. Crassus lost his life in this battle. Carrhae went down in history as one of the greatest military catastrophes Rome faced in the East.
