The Chinese Cultural Revolution was a large-scale political and social movement launched under the leadership of Mao Zedong in 1966 that lasted about ten years.

Mao aimed to purge his rivals within the Communist Party and to revive the revolutionary spirit. Young groups known as the Red Guards were mobilized; intellectuals, officials, and traditional cultural elements were targeted. The period led to great social turmoil and repression. The Cultural Revolution formally ended after Mao's death in 1976.
