The lines of walls that different states in China had built for defense along their northern frontiers began to be connected and expanded during the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, after the Qin Dynasty unified the country in 221 BCE.

The aim was to protect the frontier against the incursions of the nomadic peoples in the north. The greater part of the stone structure seen today belongs to the much later Ming Dynasty period.
