The Curiosity rover, sent as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, successfully landed in the Gale Crater region of Mars in August 2012.

The car-sized vehicle was designed to investigate the planet's geology, climate history, and whether conditions suitable for microbial life had existed in the past. With the scientific instruments it carried, Curiosity conducted analyses of rock and soil and provided important findings, including evidence that Mars had held liquid water in the past.
