In 1144, the center of the County of Edessa (Urfa), one of the first Crusader states established as a result of the Crusades, was captured by the forces of Imad al-Din Zengi, the atabeg of Mosul.

The collapse of a Crusader state in this way caused a great stir in Europe and became one of the principal factors leading to the organization of the Second Crusade.
