Edison’s Incandescent Lamp

1879 CE · ABD · invention

In 1879 the American inventor Thomas Edison made significant progress toward developing a practical incandescent light bulb capable of providing light for an extended period.

Edison's contribution lay less in a single component than in combining a durable filament, an effective vacuum, and a system that made electrical distribution possible. Other inventors had also worked on incandescent lighting; Edison's system, however, played a decisive role in the spread of electric lighting.
