In the autumn of 1942, the Second Battle of El Alamein took place near El Alamein in northern Egypt between the British-led Allied forces under the command of Bernard Montgomery and the Axis forces under the command of Erwin Rommel.

This battle, won by the Allies, halted the Axis advance in North Africa toward the Suez Canal and the oil regions of the Middle East. The battle is regarded as a turning point at which the initiative on the North African front passed to the Allies.
