On 12 April 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to go into space, completing a full orbit of the Earth in the Vostok 1 capsule.

The flight lasted approximately an hour and a half. This achievement became a great source of prestige for the Soviet Union in the space race and, following Sputnik, reinforced the USSR's leadership in space technology.
