Abdullah Gül Elected President

The election took place through a vote held in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and this process was the scene of intense political debate at the time. Gül had previously served as prime minister and minister of foreign affairs. The debates surrounding the presidential election brought with them, within the same year, the agenda of early general elections and constitutional amendment.
