The abolition of the caliphate took place on 3 March 1924 through a law adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

Following the proclamation of the Republic, the institution of the caliphate bound to the Ottoman dynasty was ended, and members of the dynasty were sent out of the country. In the same process, new regulations concerning religious affairs were enacted. The abolition of the caliphate meant the disappearance of an institution of symbolic importance for Muslim communities and became one of the significant stages in the transition to a secular state structure.
