Hannibal Crosses the Alps

218 BCE · Alpler · war

In the Second Punic War, the Carthaginian commander Hannibal crossed his army, together with elephants, over the Alps in 218 BCE and struck Italy from within.

At Cannae he inflicted on Rome one of the heaviest defeats in its history. Although Rome ultimately prevailed, Hannibal's campaign is regarded as one of the most audacious maneuvers in military history and is considered a classic of encirclement and siege tactics.
