At the Battle of Hattin in 1187, the Ayyubid army under the command of Saladin inflicted a decisive defeat on the Crusader forces of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Thirst and unfavorable conditions weakened the Crusader army. The victory opened the way for Saladin to take many cities, including Jerusalem, and significantly shifted the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean against the Crusaders.
