Handover of Hong Kong

The sovereignty over the territory, which had long been under British administration, was transferred to the People's Republic of China within the framework of the agreements that had been concluded. The transfer was arranged on the basis of the principle of 'one country, two systems'; within this framework, Hong Kong was granted a special administrative structure and the ability to maintain its distinctive economic and legal order for a certain period of time. The ceremony symbolized the end of the colonial era.
