In 1796 the English physician Edward Jenner developed a method of vaccination against smallpox.

Observing that persons who had contracted cowpox did not contract smallpox, Jenner, proceeding from this observation, carried out the first scientific application of a vaccine. His work laid the foundations of immunization and pioneered the development of modern vaccine science. Jenner's method later played a decisive role in bringing smallpox under control worldwide.
