Around 105 CE, according to tradition, Cai Lun, an official at the Han court, systematized the production of cheap and durable paper from mulberry bark, hemp, and rags.

Far more economical than papyrus and parchment, paper transformed the recording and dissemination of knowledge. Reaching Europe centuries later by way of the Islamic world, it paved the way for printing and mass communication.
