In 330 CE the Roman emperor Constantine I rebuilt the old Greek city of Byzantion on the shore of the Bosphorus and proclaimed it the new capital of the empire, giving the city the name Constantinople.

Thanks to its strategic location, the city became the center of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire for centuries and became one of the most important cities in the world politically, commercially, and culturally.
