Saladin Captures Jerusalem

1187 CE · military

In the year 1187, following the victory at Hattin, the Ayyubid ruler Saladin besieged and captured Jerusalem.

The city passed back into Muslim rule after nearly ninety years of Crusader domination. The relatively moderate conduct Saladin pursued after the conquest drew attention in the sources of the period. The taking of Jerusalem became one of the main reasons for the organization of the Third Crusade.
