Nelson Mandela Released

1990 CE · Güney Afrika · political

On 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela, who had spent about twenty-seven years in prison in South Africa for his struggle against the apartheid regime, was released.

His release coincided with the period in which the government of President F. W. de Klerk lifted the ban on the African National Congress (ANC) and took steps aimed at ending the system based on racial discrimination. Mandela's regaining of his freedom is regarded as one of the symbolic beginnings of the democratic transition process in the country.
