Establishment of the Mamluk Sultanate

1250 CE · Kahire · founding

The Mamluk Sultanate arose in Egypt and its surroundings when rulers of military-slave origin seized power.

The Mamluk commanders, who gained strength after the Ayyubid period, established a state ruled by sultans chosen from among themselves. This sultanate played important military roles against the remnants of the Crusader states and the Mongol threat coming from the east, and it remained influential in the region for a long time.
