In 313 CE the emperors Constantine I and Licinius, by the decision they reached at Milan, granted official tolerance to Christianity and to all religions; confiscated church properties were returned.

The edict, which ended three centuries of persecution, opened the way for Christianity to spread freely in the empire and set in motion the path leading to its becoming the state religion in 380. It is considered a turning point in the history of religious freedom.
