Monroe Doctrine

The doctrine opposed European states establishing new colonies on the American continent or intervening in existing independent states. In return, the United States stated that it would not interfere in Europe's internal affairs. This principle became a long-term point of reference in defining the United States' sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere and shaped its foreign policy for a long time.
