Montreux Convention

1936 CE · Montreux · diplomatic

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, signed in 1936 in the city of Montreux, Switzerland, gave Turkey control of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits.

The convention, by altering the arrangement established under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne that had demilitarized the straits, granted Turkey the authority to refortify the region and to regulate passages. While guaranteeing the free passage of merchant ships in peacetime, it imposed restrictions on the passage of warships. The convention remains in force today.
