Battle of Moscow

1941 CE · Moskova · military

In late 1941, the German forces advancing as part of Operation Barbarossa reached the outskirts of Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union.

The Soviet army, aided by the harsh winter conditions and reinforcement units, halted the German advance and, going over to the counterattack, drove the enemy back from before the city. The Battle of Moscow is regarded as one of the first major land defeats suffered by the German army on the Eastern Front and revealed the failure of the plans for a swift victory.
