In 1949, during the early period of the Cold War, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded for the purpose of common defense against the threat posed by the Soviet Union.

According to the treaty signed by the United States, Canada, and numerous Western European countries, an attack against one of the member states would be considered an attack against all. NATO became the military cornerstone of the Western alliance throughout the Cold War and continues to exist today.
