In 532 CE in Constantinople, during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, the Nika Riot broke out.

The revolt, which began with the combination of rival fan factions at the hippodrome and discontent with the administration, led to the destruction of a large part of the city. The uprising was harshly suppressed. After the event, the damaged city was rebuilt; the reconstruction of Hagia Sophia was also carried out during this period.
