The Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro entered the Inca Empire in 1532 with a handful of soldiers and took the Inca ruler Atahualpa captive at Cajamarca.

Exploiting firearms, horses, and internal conflicts, the Spanish quickly gained the upper hand. These events initiated the collapse of the Inca State and laid the foundation of Spanish colonial rule in South America.
