On 1 September 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland through a large-scale military operation launched from the west.

Germany applied rapid attack tactics based on the coordinated use of air and ground forces. On 17 September, the Soviet Union also entered Polish territory from the east. The invasion resulted in Poland being divided between the two powers within a short time and led the United Kingdom and France to declare war on Germany, thereby beginning the Second World War.
