Prague Spring

1968 CE · political

The Prague Spring is the reform process initiated in Czechoslovakia in 1968 under the leadership of Alexander Dubček.

The reforms, expressed with the slogan "socialism with a human face," envisaged the expansion of freedom of expression and political liberalization. However, the Soviet Union and the other members of the Warsaw Pact ended the reform process in August 1968 by invading the country through military intervention. The event laid bare the limits of reform initiatives within the Eastern Bloc and the rigidity of Soviet control.
