Division of the Roman Empire

395 CE · political

In AD 395, following the death of Emperor Theodosius I, the Roman Empire was divided administratively between his sons into east and west.

The eastern part, with its capital at Constantinople and later referred to as Byzantium, continued to exist as a state for centuries. The western part, with its capital around Rome, gradually weakened and disintegrated over the course of the 5th century.
