Discovery of X-rays

In 1895 the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, during experiments with cathode-ray tubes, observed a new type of radiation different from known light, capable of passing through matter and affecting photographic plates, which he named X-rays.

The discovery quickly found application in medicine because it made it possible to image the internal structure of the human body. Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
