The Japanese successes in the Battle of Mukden on land and the naval Battle of Tsushima at sea were decisive. The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth, signed under the mediation of the United States; Japan consolidated its influence in the region. The outcome, by showing that an Asian state could defeat a great European empire, resonated worldwide and contributed to the development of the events known as the Russian Revolution of 1905.
