Alaska Purchase

1867 CE · political

In 1867, Russia sold its territory of Alaska in North America to the United States.

Through the agreement led by the United States Secretary of State William Seward, this vast region changed hands in return for a certain sum. This purchase, which was criticized and seen as unnecessary by public opinion at the time, came to be regarded in later years as an important gain for the United States owing to the natural resources discovered in the region and its strategic location. Alaska subsequently became a state of the United States.
