SALT I and ABM Treaty

1972 CE · diplomatic

SALT I is the treaty signed in 1972 between the United States and the Soviet Union that provided for the limitation of strategic nuclear weapons.

The ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) Treaty, signed within the same framework, limited the parties' missile defense systems. These agreements were important steps aimed at reining in the arms race during the Cold War and creating an atmosphere of relaxation (détente) between the two superpowers. The agreements played a decisive role in the development of nuclear arms control diplomacy.
