The uprising that began in 73 BCE under the leadership of the gladiator Spartacus turned into a great revolt joined by slaves and fugitives in Rome.

For a time the rebels achieved significant successes against the Roman armies. The uprising was suppressed in 71 BCE by Roman forces under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus; Spartacus died in the fighting, and the revolt was brought to a bloody end.
