In 751, the Abbasid armies and the forces of the Tang Dynasty confronted one another near the Talas River.

This battle, in which the Abbasids prevailed, is regarded as a turning point in the struggle for influence in Central Asia. It is widely accepted that after the battle Islamic influence increased in the region and that knowledge of papermaking spread westward.
