Following the Armistice of Mudros, after the occupation of various regions of the country and the dissolution of the parliament in Istanbul, the national movement led by Mustafa Kemal convened a new assembly in Ankara. The Grand National Assembly, based on the principle of national sovereignty, assumed executive and legislative authority and became the political center of the War of Independence. The opening of the assembly is one of the turning points at which the foundations of the modern Turkish state were laid.
