The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest took place in AD 9, in the territory of present-day Germany, between Roman legions and Germanic tribes led by Arminius.

In the ambush-style engagement, three Roman legions suffered a major rout. This defeat constituted an important limit on Rome's efforts to bring the Germanic lands east of the Rhine River permanently under control.
